Mmmmm...dirt!

I suppose some moms would prevent their child from eating dirt. I figure the sooner he learns it's not all that tasty, the sooner he'll stop putting it in his mouth.

Eat your greens!

Maybe it's because Tim and I try to eat well, or maybe it is because of our failed attempt at nursing, but I try to provide Conrad with the best diet I can as he transitions into a little man. I aim for fresh organic food whenever I can, even better when I can support our local growers. Conrad and I make almost weekly trips to our farmer's market; I shop, he flirts. His typical day includes a super porridge in the morning (made from grinded grains and sometimes beans from the co-op) with veggies added and sometimes a little nutritional yeast sprinkled on top. Every other day we add an egg yolk. His second big meal each day has a yogurt base, more veggies and/or fruit, and wheat germ sprinkled on top. For snacks he enjoys Great Harvest bread, cheese, fresh fruit, tofu, organic cereals. For the most part, he eats really well. Yes, even kale. And beets, beet greens, spinach, green beans, kohlrabi, squash. But would you believe it's broccoli and peas we have the most trouble with? No worries though, a little applesauce mixed in and it's all better. One of his favorite foods is cantaloupe. And cookies and any kind of ice cream. And popsicles. (hey, we need to be realistic!)

Through it all, we know we are lucky to have my mom support these decisions. Not all daycare providers would want to deal with the extra work of heating frozen food cubes, grabbing from the organic banana bunch instead of the kwik trip banana bunch, and sharing so much fridge space for his "special" food. It's not just the special diet she has supported, but also clothe diapers for 11 months. Now that Tim and I sold our washer/dryer, she's even letting us wash the diapers at her place now!

A few firsts....

Since the last posting, Conrad has been feeling MUCH better (no longer using the albuterol!). He finally got his first tooth late June and just yesterday a second tooth made an appearance. Another big first, that both myself and his aunt Tricia witnessed, were his first "hands-free" steps. This wasn't just a shift in weight, or 1 little step, this was 3-4 steps - some distance was covered!
He also went swimming this month for the first time. I'm looking forward to all that August will bring.....
