Conrad and I frequently play this game. One of us picks a word, and then together we come up with as many other words as we can that start with the same sound. It's amazing to hear some of the words he comes up with, sometimes words I didn't even know he's heard before! (no, not bad words, just random words that I wouldn't expect from a four year old).
September passed us by quite quickly. A few notable memories, all starting with "S" include:
Stars - not only did we had some beautiful clear nights with mild temperatures for outdoor viewing, one morning I woke about 5am and could see perfectly framed by the dome window in the center of our ceiling the Little Dipper.
Skunks - in all these years out on the prairie, we never saw skunks before this fall. Several weeks ago, we starting seeing and smelling the roadkill skunks on our way into town. Then one morning we narrowly missed hitting one on our driveway! Too close to home - yikes! The very next day we went for an evening walk down to the river and stayed a bit too long, it was getting quite dark as we walked home. I caught a little movement out of the corner of my eye in the ditch. SKUNK! I quickly veered the chariot and Conrad away from the side of the road. At the same time, Tim sees the rest of the family on the OTHER side of the road. We beelined down the middle of that road as quickly as possible and I held my breath in silent prayer. Whew - much too close. And we still had 1/2 mile of driveway to cover before reaching the safety of home. And of course we didn't have any light with us. Every rustle had me jumping and peering intently into the cornfields.
Standing - Norrie started pulling herself up to standing, and then smiles ear to ear.
Sounds and Spelling - Conrad seems to be getting ready to read! He asks lots of questions, points to words and tells me how they start, or finish, or what sound is in the middle. When he's making thank you cards or birthday cards, he'll write some of the words as I dictate the letters to him. Last week I spelled out Happy Birthday to him and went on my business of washing dishes. Next thing I know he's written "E" and "L" and is asking me if "I" is the next letter to his friend's name.
"S" was easy, not planning on doing "O" for October!
