to the Tropics for a day

Now that Tim is a city employee, he gets extra holidays – like Presidents Day. We took advantage of the opportunity for a family field trip day and explored the Tropics at the MN Zoo. Conrad did awesome and seemed to really enjoy the animals and the exhibits. Okay, mostly the animals. We saw a Malaysian sun bear that he was convinced was a dog. We pointed, told him bear, growled. He shook his head, signed it was a dog and barked. In his defense, it was an awfully small bear. Comparable to a fat golden retriever.

Most the animals fell into categories, determined by Conrad. Birds, cows, dogs, cat. He had very busy hands making all these signs for us. He does know other animal signs-duck, horse, pig for example, but he seemed to have forgotten those in his excitement. Lots of animals were taking baths according to Conrad. Any exhibit with water constituted a bath. He’s had bathing on the mind for the last several weeks. Every single day he’s asking for “bath, bath”. At the yurt he’ll climb on the bed and stretch to reach the tub (it hangs on the wall). When we’re visiting family in town, he’ll make his bath sign before disappearing into the bathroom. Even has climbed into the tub and starts playing with the faucets. He hasn’t actually figured out how to turn on the water yet. He’s become quite adept at several other things though; opening/closing doors, crawling in/out of his pack n play, climbing up into the baby’s highchair at daycare (when the tray has been left off). As a result of his climbing, and joy of jumping on furniture, he has acquired a few bumps to the head. Nothing serious. It’s truly amazing how quickly the biggest lumps and bumps to the head disappear. Goose-eggs completely disappear over night!
